Puccini: Last of the Italian Opera Geniuses

This class focuses on Giacomo Puccini, the most popular opera composer in the world. The five sessions of the course share magnificent music from all of his operas which teem with glorious melodies. The operas in chronological order are: Le Villi, Edgar, Manon Lescaut, La Boheme, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, La fanciulla del West, La Rondine, the three one act operas of Il Trittico, and finally, Turandot. The operas will be introduced within the context of Puccini’s life and work as well as the history of operatic developments at the end of the nineteenth century and the first quarter of the twentieth century.
